The two best known golf courses on P.E.I. are Crowbush Cove and Dunderave. Crowbush has “wow” factor and plenty of challenge, so when we designed Dunderave, we tried to keep as much “wow” factor while making the golf a little more relaxed and enjoyable. From the back tees, Dundarave has plenty of bite, but the course becomes more manageable as you progress down to teeing options.
What gives Dunderave its personality is a combination of our use of the wonderful piece of land while trying to save mature woodlands, protecting the river’s edge, preserving wetlands, and enhancing the overall environment we were trusted to work with. The result is a beautiful collage of golf holes that allows golfers to pleasantly experience the many different ecosystems of the Brudenell River Valley – it’s a mature hike disguised as a golf course.
One of the distinguishing features of Dunderave is the red sand. This was not intentional, but a case of letting nature be. At this end of P.E.I., the soil is very rich in iron, as is the sandstone sand which gives it a red or rusted color. Sand was plentiful on this site and so, there are lots of bunkers.
Every golfer will have their favourite golf hole, but I am sure many will show up in those “favourite lists.” These include the eight, a short, sharp dogleg left around the bay of the Brudenell River where the green is set on a peninsula and surrounded by water on three sides. The quirky but fun par-4 sixteenth hole, which tempts golfers to drive the green, or the seventeenth, an all world par-3 played from the highest point on the property to a green protected by and enormous right side bunker.
The golf course ends well too, with a par five demanding a precise downhill drive and an uphill second shot avoiding a maze of bunkers – par is a good score on the eighteenth.
