Mill River: PEI’s Stunning Beauty

Your Big Break to Western PEI Golf

Located on the western side of Prince Edward Island, within the Mill River Provincial Park, the Mill River course is a Robbie Robinson design that winds its way through a heavily wooded property, with many of the fairways doglegging one way or the other across the rolling landscape.

As many of you will know, Mill River hosted Golf Channel’s Big Break PEI and we would be playing it on a sunny, mild fall day — excitement levels were at a peak.

The consensus of our group was that Mill River was the best conditioned of the Island operated courses and, as mentioned, featured the most challenging greens. The front nine is very strong. “Hunters Spring,” the 419-yard 7th is a feature hole on the front nine, where water cuts across a split fairway that veers to the left on its way to the green.

While on the back nine, the565-yard 13th “Aquabound” also kinks to the left as it heads to a two-tiered, pond protected putting surface.

This mature forest course is the discerning golfer’s dream with 18 totally different memories for both the high and low handicap player. Wide rolling fairways, well bunkered greens, subtle elevation changes and numerous lakes and streams make each hole a new challenge and a pleasure to play.

Measuring 6,885 yards from the tips, the course has been upgraded by Graham Cook in recent times when, amongst other work that his design firm carried out, the 18th hole was redesigned. The views on your approach shot on eighteen are worth a photo break.

Clinton E. Robinson, better known as Robbie, loved the game of golf and spent his life bringing it to the masses. A golf course architect who apprenticed under the legendary Stanley Thompson, Robinson designed or remodelled more than 100 courses. Perhaps his single most significant contribution to the game was in the study of turfgrass and the dissemination of this information through the establishment of the Canadian Turfgrass shows and as the Green Section director for the RCGA in the 1950s.
